Chapter 1
Joshua, Karen, and Davy sat on the front porch of Joshua's house, enjoying the late summer morning weather.
“How's Pat doing?” asked Joshua Davy.
“Okay, I guess. She got hit with some stomach virus last night,” answered Davy.
“Some sort of flu bug?” asked Karen.
“Yeah,” replied Davy. “I called earlier, and her mom said she was resting.”
“That's not good,” said Karen. “Especially during the summer. I'll have to stop by tomorrow to see her. Well, I have to run off to work,” she added, giving Joshua a quick kiss.
“My shift starts this afternoon after my dentist appointment,” said Joshua. “I'll see you then!”
“Hey,” Davy admonished. “Where's my kiss?”
Karen waved a fist in his face. “Right here!” she laughed before getting into the truck.
Davy and Joshua waved to Karen, and she beeped the horn as she drove away. “Hey, Buckwheat, let's go see how Pat is doing. I think she'd like a visit.”
“We might not be able to see her,” said Joshua as they walked toward his car. “But if nothing else, her mom can tell her we stopped by.”
Chapter 2
It wasn't but a few minutes later that they were trudging up the stairwell to the second floor apartment where Pat and her mother lived. Davy opened the door and called out, “Hi Mom!”
Mrs. Snodgrass turned from the kitchen sink. “Oh, hi Davy! Hello, Joshua.”
“Can we see Pat for a bit?” asked Davy.
“Afraid not, Davy,” she replied. “She was really sick last night, so she didn't get much rest. But she's sleeping a lot better today.”
“That's good,” said Davy. “When she wakes up, tell her we said HI and have her give me a call.”
“I will, Davy. Thanks for stopping by!”
As Davy and Joshua walked down the stairs to the front door, Joshua commented, “Pretty rough to get sick in the middle of summer like that.”
“Yeah,” said Davy as they stepped outside. “I should get her some flowers or something.”
“Say, that's a nice idea! Come on, Batman, I'll take you over to the florist, and we can—”
Davy cut him off in mid-sentence. “What, and go to all that trouble? Anybody can do that! I want to do something with a more personal touch.”
“Why am I suddenly worried about the outcome of this?” asked Joshua.
“You worry too much.” said Davy as he grabbed a potted flower from the neighbors walkway. “She'll like these!”
“You can't give those to her!”
“Sure I can,” announced Davy. “Here, hold them a minute,” he replied, thrusting them into Joshua's arms. Then he picked up a ladder that was on the lawn. “This should do the trick.” He brought the ladder around to the side of the house and propped it against the wall under Pat's bedroom window.
“I don't know if this is such a good idea,” said Joshua.
“Of course it is,” said Davy. “They do this all the time in the movies.”
Chapter 3
Davy took the pot from Joshua and started to make his way up the ladder. He dropped the flowers before he reached the top. “Oops, I lost that one,” he said, looking down at the spilled plant.
“I told you this was a bad idea.” Joshua hollered.
Davy came down the ladder and ran over to grab another plant. “That one was for practice,” he grumbled before he scurried back up the ladder. When he got to the top, he couldn't quite see into her window. “Rats. This dumb ladder is too short.”
“Just set it on the window sill,” said Joshua.
“There isn't enough room,” said Davy. “Maybe I can knock the screen out. Those are pretty loose.” And with that, Davy drilled the flower pot through the screen.
Joshua could hear the screen clatter to the floor and the crash of the flower pot. Davy started back down the ladder, then paused. “Wait, I almost forgot.”
“What?” asked Joshua.
Davy climbed back to the top of the ladder, pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, and scribbled something on it before wadding it up and tossing it through the window.
“What was that for?” asked Joshua as Davy came down the ladder.
“Oh, it was a note,” said Davy. “Just so she knows who brought her the flowers.”
Joshua scratched his head. “I think this one already has your signature all over it,” he replied as they went back to the car.
